Architectural Significance
This straightforward, L-plan Greek Revival house is noteworthy for its "volume", specifically the relationship of the main flocks form to that of its two southern ells. (The ells may pre-date the main block). The main block stands with a wide 3-bay gable facing East St. The 5-bay, south facing, main facade's center entrance features narrow sidelights, Doric pilasters and a heavy classicized entablature. The main block's windows are simply enframed and contain 2/2 wood sash. The southern-most, 1 1/2 story ell exhibits windows containing 6/6 wood sash.
Historical Significance
Located in the remote, northeastern section of Bridgewater, near the Halifax line, this house appears on the l830 map labeled H. Holmes. By the mid 1870s, a John Holmes and John Holmes Jr., shoemakers, are listed here. Members of the Holmes family owned this house until at least the early 1900s.
