Architectural Significance
This is one of the more substantial mid-19th century houses on Union Street. It is a solid, crisply detailed example of an L-plan main block/side ell/stable. Its sidehall plan main block rises 2 1/2 stories to a gable roof. Particularly noteworthy are the front door's enframements e.g. Doric pilasters and a door hood with curving brackets and pendants, still extant is the large gable roofed stable. In general, windows are fully enframed and cornice headed in the Italianate manner.
Historical Significance
Built c. 1865, this house was for many years the home of Southworth Harlow, blacksmith and carriage smith. Although located only one block from Central Square, Union St. developed relatively late, c. 1850s-1880s.
