Architectural Significance
This is a Greek Revival farm house which is composed of a 1 1/2 story main block and 1-story rear wing. Particularly noteworthy is its center entrance enframement, e.g. narrow, multipane sidelights, wide pilasters and heavy, classicized entablature. This house is enclosed bya gable roof with return eaves.
Historical Significance
1692 South St., is a solid, straightforward example of a mid 19th century, Bridgewater farmhouse. Although the 1830 map indicates a house belonging to a J. Holmes on or near this site, this house has the appearance of a c. 1845 Greek Revival house. Between c. 1850 and 1900, owners included an S. Washburn, Jr. Leonard Gibbs (farmer) and Charles A. Carlson (farmer).
