Architectural Significance

This house appears to be an extensively renovated Federal house. Houses with #1085's L-shaped plan appear on this site on 19th c. maps and atlases. In any event, this house with its symmetrical 5-bay center entrance main facade and hipped roof is compatible with the other houses in the area.

Historical Significance

J. E. Crane's "Map of Bridgewater in 1716" indicates that a house belonging to John Fobes was located on or near the site of #1085 Pleasant St. By the early 1830s an S. Fobes lived in a house on this site. His son Hosea Kingman, the Central Square (Bridgewater) attorney and notary public owned this property during the early 1900s.
