Architectural Significance
This is a well preserved, stylistically conservative example of a c. 1820 southeastern Massachusetts Federal house. Composed of a 5 bay by 2 bay main block, its symmetrical 5 bay facade opens on to a porch of undetermined age and features a center entrance with atttenuated enframements—including a semi-circular fan light. In general, windows are simply enframed and contain 12/12 sash. This house culminates in boxed eaves and a low hip roof with brick chimneys near the north and south walls.
Historical Significance
Built c. 1820, this handsome Federal style house was originally located on Pleasant St. and moved to North St. at an undetermined date. Rev. Ebenizer Gay is said to have been an early owner of this house. Born October 11, 1792 in Walpole, MA, he graduated from Harvard in 1814 and became pastor of the Trinitarian Congregational Church at Scotland in 1823.
