Architectural Significance
Well sited on a tree shaded rise on the west side of North St., near Pleasant St., this Greek Revival Italianate cottage is of interest as a departure from center hall and side hall plans. Rising 1 1/2 stories from a heavy granite block foundation to a broad gable roof, this dwelling stands with its 3 bay east gable to the street. The entrance is located on the 4 bay south wall near the southeast corner. Its front door is surrounded by heaving Doric pilasters and classicized entablature. Its windows are fully enframed with shallow cornices and 6/1 wood sash. This house's edges are crisply defined by wide corner and farcia boards. The east, west and south gables exhibit sawcut brackets and return eaves.
Historical Significance
Built c. 1850, this house was for many years the home of Abiel Bassett, farmer. He is indicated as this property's owner on the 1852 and 1857 maps, as well as in the 1879 atlas. By the early 1900s, Freeman H. Kaizer, farmer, lived here.
