Architectural Significance
#31 Maple Street provides physical evidence that the Italianate style was popular in Bridgewater as late as the 1880s. This house (and #37 next door) posseses side hall plans, cornice headed windows, gable roof with return eaves. #31 is of an L-shaped plan with a south wing which encompases a barn. Still intact is the entrance porch with slat-work balusters, champfered porch posts and curved brackets.
Historical Significance
Maple Street was called Springhill Avenue as late as the early 20th century— it was an extension of a cul de sac off Summer St. which was laid out c. 1850. During the 1870's this was part of a large lot belonging to A. T. Lowe. Maple Street houses were built or moved here during the early-mid 1880's. The 1887 0.H. Bailey Birds eye view map indicates that all of the houses which presently line this street were built by that time. This house was apparently built by and for Elijah B. Gammons, "wood turner".
