Architectural Significance
This is a Greek Revival house with a rectangular, side hall plan main block and rear ell. Its 3-bay main facade features a projecting front porch with fluted Doric columns which support a heavy entablature. Adjacent to the entrance are a pair of multipane full-length windows. This house is surmounted by a pedimented attic. Cornerboards accent its edges. Windows are fully enframed with shallow cornices.
Historical Significance
This house, together with its remarkably intact landscape features, provides a glimpse of Bridgewater's antebellum prosperity. Built c. late 1840's, this house was for many years the house of Caleb Hobart. He is listed in 1870's directories as an insurance agent (29 State Street, Boston). By the early 1900's Caleb's widow, Eliza W. Hobart, owned this property. The coming of the Old Colony Railroad to Bridgewater in 1846 made comuting to work in Boston feasible.
